Video Surveillance Software

Custom video surveillance software that puts cameras, recordings and alerts in one place for the people responsible for a site.

Business goals

The client needed video surveillance software for people who are responsible for watching over property but can't stare at screens all day. Those users need to see a camera right away, find a moment in recorded video quickly and hear about activity without watching constantly. As camera counts and locations grow, access control also matters, because recorded footage is sensitive and not everyone should see all of it.

Project overview

Hexagon developed the client's video surveillance software. Users can view live cameras, review recordings on a timeline, and get alerts for motion events. Administrators organize cameras by site, decide who can see which ones and set how long footage is kept. The software gives operators one place to work, rather than a separate viewer for each location, and it was built to take on more cameras over time.

Challenges faced and solved

Surveillance software gets judged in the five minutes after something goes wrong.

The challenge

Finding the moment that matters

After an incident, someone has to find a few seconds of video within hours of footage. Scrubbing through recordings by hand is slow, especially when a manager or insurer is waiting.

Our solution

We built a timeline review with camera and date filters and event markers, so users can go directly to the part of the recording they need.

The challenge

Too many alerts to take seriously

Motion alerts fire for shadows, weather and passing traffic. Once people get used to false alarms, they start ignoring notifications, including the one that turned out to be real.

Our solution

We made alerts configurable per camera, with schedules and sensitivity settings, so people get notified about activity at times when it matters.

The challenge

Controlling who sees what

Footage can show staff, customers and private areas. Shared logins leave no way to limit that access or find out later who looked at which camera.

Our solution

We built user accounts with camera-level permissions and an access log, so each person sees only their cameras and activity stays on record.

The challenge

Managing storage over time

Video fills up disks fast. Keep too little and the footage is gone when you need it; keep too much and the cost of storage keeps climbing.

Our solution

We added retention settings by camera or site, so older footage gets cleared on a schedule the customer sets and controls.

Features

FeatureDescription
Monitoring staff
1. Live Camera ViewUsers open any permitted camera and see what it's seeing now, without switching tools.
2. Multi-Camera GridSeveral feeds display on one screen, letting one person keep an eye on a whole site.
3. Timeline PlaybackRecordings appear on a timeline, so users can drag to a specific time rather than opening files.
4. Search by Camera and DateFilters narrow hours of footage down to the right camera and period.
5. Event MarkersMotion events are marked on the timeline, which points reviewers to where something happened.
6. Clip ExportUsers save a short section of video to hand to a manager, insurer or the police.
7. Motion AlertsNotifications tell staff about activity, so nobody needs to watch every feed.
8. Alert HistoryPast alerts stay listed with their time and camera, and each links to the matching footage.
Administrators
9. Camera ManagementAdmins add cameras, rename them and check whether each one is online.
10. Site and Location GroupsCameras are organized by location, which keeps a larger deployment easy to navigate.
11. User Accounts and RolesViewers and administrators get different capabilities, so sensitive settings stay protected.
12. Camera-Level PermissionsAccess can be limited to specific cameras or sites, which matters for private areas.
13. Alert Rules and SchedulesAdmins choose which cameras alert, how sensitive they are and during what hours.
14. Retention SettingsAdmins set how long footage is kept, balancing evidence needs against storage.
15. Access LogThe system records who viewed or exported footage, giving a trail to check when questions come up.
16. Camera Health NoticesAdmins hear when a camera goes offline, so they don't learn about a gap only when they need the video.

How the platform is put together

The result

The client has its own surveillance software, with live view, recorded video review and alerts together in one product. Administrators control cameras, access and retention from the same place.

How we took it from idea to launch

Good software follows a process. Here are the six stages, and what happens in each one.

Stage 1

Discovery & Requirements

Goal: Define the product vision, target audience and core business requirements.

Key activities
  • Stakeholder interviews
  • Market and competitor research
  • Defining user personas
  • Drafting technical specifications or a Product Requirements Document (PRD)
Stage 2

Design (UX / UI)

Goal: Create an intuitive user experience and visual interface.

Key activities
  • UX design: information architecture, user flows and wireframes
  • UI design: high-fidelity mockups and interactive prototypes in Figma or similar tools
  • Design system: colors, typography and component libraries
Stage 3

Development: Frontend & Backend

Goal: Build the functional application using agile sprints.

Key activities
  • Backend: set up databases, design APIs (REST, GraphQL), implement server logic, and configure authentication and authorization (OAuth, RBAC)
  • Frontend: build responsive interfaces and connect components to backend APIs
  • Version control: manage code through Git and GitHub
Stage 4

Security & Optimization

Goal: Harden the application against vulnerabilities and boost performance.

Key activities
  • Security: address the OWASP Top 10, including injection, XSS and CSRF, enforce encryption in transit and at rest, and implement rate limiting
  • Optimization: code splitting and lazy loading, database indexing, API caching and load testing
  • QA and testing: unit, integration and end-to-end tests
Stage 5

Beta Release

Goal: Deploy to a controlled group of real users to catch edge-case bugs and gather feedback.

Key activities
  • Set up staging and production CI/CD pipelines
  • Launch a closed or open beta with real users
  • Monitor errors through observability tools
Stage 6

Public Release (Launch)

Goal: Roll the software out to the general public.

Key activities
  • Final production deployment
  • DNS configuration
  • Marketing and onboarding rollout
  • Post-launch performance and security monitoring

Business benefits

Faster incident review

Staff reach the relevant footage quickly when an incident needs answers.

Alerts worth reading

Schedules and sensitivity settings cut down on false alarms.

Better privacy control

Permissions and logs limit who sees footage and record who did.

Predictable storage

Retention rules keep footage from filling disks without warning.

Conclusion

Security cameras are easy to buy. The harder part is the software that makes the footage useful on a bad day, when someone needs one clip fast and needs to trust who has seen it. Hexagon built the client's surveillance software around those moments: quick playback, sensible alerts, tight access and clear storage rules. FAQs

Can you build surveillance software as a product we own?Yes. This was custom software development, not a reseller setup, so talk to us about ownership terms for your project.
Can it limit footage access by person?Yes. Permissions work down to individual cameras, and an access log records who viewed and exported video.
Can alerts be limited to certain hours?Yes. Alert schedules and sensitivity are set per camera.
Will this work with the cameras we already have?It depends on the models. Tell us what you run and we'll check compatibility during discovery.
