Home Security Recording Software

Recording software that makes sure home camera footage is captured, kept and easy to find when something happens.

DeliverablesSecurity recording software, playback and search, clip export, storage and health monitoring
IndustrySecurity & Technology

Business goals

The client works in home security, where cameras are only as useful as the footage they leave behind. After a break-in or a stolen package, a homeowner wants the exact minute of video, quickly, and with no special training. The client needed recording software that keeps cameras recording dependably, manages limited storage sensibly, and helps ordinary people find and save a clip. It also needed installers and support staff to see when a system had stopped recording.

Project overview

Hexagon developed security recording software for the client. It captures video from home cameras on a schedule or when motion triggers it, then manages storage so older footage makes room for new. Homeowners review events on a timeline and export clips to share with police or insurers. Installers and support staff can check that recording is actually running, because a camera that quietly stopped is the failure that hurts most.

Challenges faced and solved

Nobody thinks about recorded footage until the day they urgently need it, so it has to already be there.

The challenge

Discovering the gap too late

The classic surveillance failure is learning after an incident that a camera stopped recording days earlier. A live picture on the screen does not prove that footage is being saved.

Our solution

We added recording health checks that flag a camera with no recent footage, a failing disk or low storage, before an incident exposes the gap.

The challenge

Finding one minute in many days

Scrubbing through hours of driveway video is slow and tiring. Most homeowners give up, or miss the moment entirely, when they cannot tell which part of the day matters.

Our solution

We marked motion events on a playback timeline across cameras, so a user can jump straight to the activity and step through it.

The challenge

Storage that fills up

Video uses a lot of disk space, and home systems have limited capacity. Keep everything and recording eventually stalls. Delete carelessly, and the footage someone needs may be gone.

Our solution

We built retention settings that overwrite the oldest ordinary footage first, while letting users protect clips they want kept beyond the normal cycle.

The challenge

Getting evidence out cleanly

Police and insurers usually want a specific clip with a clear date and time. Phone recordings of a screen are poor quality and invite questions about what they show.

Our solution

We added clip export with camera name and timestamp attached, so a homeowner can hand over a clean file for the exact period requested.

Features

FeatureDescription
Homeowners
1. Live Camera ViewUsers see one camera or a grid of them, which gives a quick look at the porch or yard when something seems off.
2. Motion Event TimelineRecorded activity appears as marks on a timeline, so users can skip long stretches of nothing.
3. Multi-Camera PlaybackFootage from several cameras plays for the same time window, which helps follow a person from the driveway to the back door.
4. Date and Time SearchUsers jump straight to a specific moment, useful when a neighbor reports something at a known hour.
5. Clip ExportA selected period is saved as a file with camera and time details, ready for police or an insurer.
6. Protected ClipsImportant footage is marked to stay put when the system overwrites older recordings.
7. Motion NotificationsA phone alert for recorded motion lets users check the event as it happens.
8. Household User AccountsFamily members get their own logins, with rights set by the account owner.
System configuration
9. Recording SchedulesEach camera can record continuously or on motion at set times, balancing coverage against disk use.
10. Motion ZonesUsers mark the areas of a view that matter, which reduces triggers from a busy street or waving trees.
11. Pre-Event and Post-Event CaptureRecording includes a short period around a trigger, so a clip shows how the event began.
12. Retention SettingsOwners decide how long footage is kept within available capacity, and the oldest material is cleared first.
Installers and support staff
13. Camera OnboardingInstallers add cameras, name them by location and confirm recording before leaving the home.
14. Recording Health ChecksThe software reports cameras that are offline or have no recent footage, so problems are caught early.
15. Storage StatusStaff see disk capacity and faults, giving them time to replace a failing drive.
16. Activity LogLogins, exports and setting changes are recorded, which helps when someone asks who changed a schedule.

How the platform is put together

Each layer has one job.

What homeowners seeLive view, timeline playback, search and clip export
Native appsJavaScript
What captures the videoServices that receive camera streams, apply schedules and write footage to storage
JavaPython
What ties it togetherConnections between cameras, recordings, accounts and notifications

The result

The client has recording software built around the moment footage is needed. Video gets captured on set rules, can be found by time or event, and leaves with its details attached.

How we took it from idea to launch

Good software follows a process. Here are the six stages, and what happens in each one.

Stage 1

Discovery & Requirements

Goal: Define the product vision, target audience and core business requirements.

Key activities
  • Stakeholder interviews
  • Market and competitor research
  • Defining user personas
  • Drafting technical specifications or a Product Requirements Document (PRD)
Stage 2

Design (UX / UI)

Goal: Create an intuitive user experience and visual interface.

Key activities
  • UX design: information architecture, user flows and wireframes
  • UI design: high-fidelity mockups and interactive prototypes in Figma or similar tools
  • Design system: colors, typography and component libraries
Stage 3

Development: Frontend & Backend

Goal: Build the functional application using agile sprints.

Key activities
  • Backend: set up databases, design APIs (REST, GraphQL), implement server logic, and configure authentication and authorization (OAuth, RBAC)
  • Frontend: build responsive interfaces and connect components to backend APIs
  • Version control: manage code through Git and GitHub
Stage 4

Security & Optimization

Goal: Harden the application against vulnerabilities and boost performance.

Key activities
  • Security: address the OWASP Top 10, including injection, XSS and CSRF, enforce encryption in transit and at rest, and implement rate limiting
  • Optimization: code splitting and lazy loading, database indexing, API caching and load testing
  • QA and testing: unit, integration and end-to-end tests
Stage 5

Beta Release

Goal: Deploy to a controlled group of real users to catch edge-case bugs and gather feedback.

Key activities
  • Set up staging and production CI/CD pipelines
  • Launch a closed or open beta with real users
  • Monitor errors through observability tools
Stage 6

Public Release (Launch)

Goal: Roll the software out to the general public.

Key activities
  • Final production deployment
  • DNS configuration
  • Marketing and onboarding rollout
  • Post-launch performance and security monitoring

Business benefits

Footage when it counts

Recording problems are visible before an incident rather than after.

Less time reviewing footage

Event marks point users to the activity worth watching.

Easier conversations with police and insurers

A clean, labeled clip is simple to hand over.

Fewer support calls about the basics

Staff can see system status without a visit to the home.

Conclusion

People buy security cameras for a bad day they hope never comes. The software decides whether that day ends with useful evidence or an empty folder. Hexagon built recording software for the client around capture, retention, search and export, with health checks so failures do not stay hidden. If you sell or install home security and your recording software is letting customers down, or you want your own product instead of a resold one, tell us about your cameras and customers. We would be glad to talk.

FAQs

Can recording be continuous and motion-based?Yes. Each camera can follow its own schedule and switch between the two.
What happens when storage is full?Retention rules clear the oldest ordinary footage first, while protected clips are kept.
Can installers tell whether a system is recording?Yes. Health checks show offline cameras, missing recent footage and disk problems.
Can it work with cameras we already sell?Often, though it depends on how the cameras stream video. We check compatibility during scoping.
