Business goals

The client is a hospitality company, a business where guests and residents expect to feel safe without having to think about it. It wanted a security solution for the home, where the people responsible can see what is happening and get told promptly when something needs attention. Security hardware alone does not do that. Signals from the home need to reach a person who can act on them, in a form anyone can follow.

Project overview

Hexagon delivered a connected home security solution for the client. Devices in the home report their status to one application. People responsible for the home can see whether it is armed, get notified about events, and look back through what happened and when. The focus stayed on practical questions: is the home secure, did something happen, and who has been told. Everything else was kept out of the way.

Challenges faced and solved

Home security only helps if the right person hears about the right event at the right moment.

The challenge

Alerts nobody acts on

A security system that goes off for every small movement teaches people to ignore it. Then the one notification that truly matters gets dismissed along with all the routine noise.

Our solution

We separated events by type and arming state, so a door opening while the home is occupied is treated differently from one opening while armed.

The challenge

Trouble when nobody is home

A homeowner traveling for work or a holiday has little idea what is going on back at the house. A local siren is little comfort when no one is there to hear it.

Our solution

We sent events to a mobile application, so a responsible person can see what happened and respond from wherever they happen to be.

The challenge

Devices that fail quietly

A sensor with a flat battery or a lost connection looks fine until the night it is needed. Most households only discover the fault after something has already gone wrong.

Our solution

We built device status into the application, so an offline or low-battery device shows up as something to fix before it matters.

The challenge

Several people, one home

Family members, domestic staff and visiting guests all come and go at different times. Sharing one code among them leaves no way of telling who did what.

Our solution

We gave each person their own access, so arming and disarming can be tied to a named user in the event history.

Features

FeatureDescription
People at home
1. Arm and DisarmUsers set the home to armed, at home or off from the application, so everyday routines do not trigger needless alarms.
2. Door and Window StatusThe application shows which entry points are open or closed, answering the familiar worry about whether the back door got locked up.
3. Motion Event NotificationsA movement detected while armed is sent to the user's phone with the area and time.
4. Event HistoryA running log shows what happened and when, which helps when someone asks about last night.
5. Household AccessEach family member or trusted helper gets individual access rather than a shared code.
6. Device Health ViewLow batteries and offline devices are flagged in one place, so faults get fixed early.
Client administrators
7. Device SetupStaff add devices to a home and label them by room or entry point, so an alert reads in plain language.
8. Alert RulesAdministrators decide which events notify which people, keeping serious events separate from routine activity.
9. Escalation ContactsIf the first person does not respond, a second named contact can be notified.
10. Home OverviewStaff can check the status of the homes they support, along with any open device issues.

How the platform is put together

Each layer has one job.

On the phoneThe application for arming, alerts and event history

The result

The client now has a home security solution where device signals reach a named person, and every event leaves a record. People responsible for a home can check on it from their phones.

How we took it from idea to launch

Good software follows a process. Here are the six stages, and what happens in each one.

Stage 1

Discovery & Requirements

Goal: Define the product vision, target audience and core business requirements.

Key activities
  • Stakeholder interviews
  • Market and competitor research
  • Defining user personas
  • Drafting technical specifications or a Product Requirements Document (PRD)
Stage 2

Design (UX / UI)

Goal: Create an intuitive user experience and visual interface.

Key activities
  • UX design: information architecture, user flows and wireframes
  • UI design: high-fidelity mockups and interactive prototypes in Figma or similar tools
  • Design system: colors, typography and component libraries
Stage 3

Development: Frontend & Backend

Goal: Build the functional application using agile sprints.

Key activities
  • Backend: set up databases, design APIs (REST, GraphQL), implement server logic, and configure authentication and authorization (OAuth, RBAC)
  • Frontend: build responsive interfaces and connect components to backend APIs
  • Version control: manage code through Git and GitHub
Stage 4

Security & Optimization

Goal: Harden the application against vulnerabilities and boost performance.

Key activities
  • Security: address the OWASP Top 10, including injection, XSS and CSRF, enforce encryption in transit and at rest, and implement rate limiting
  • Optimization: code splitting and lazy loading, database indexing, API caching and load testing
  • QA and testing: unit, integration and end-to-end tests
Stage 5

Beta Release

Goal: Deploy to a controlled group of real users to catch edge-case bugs and gather feedback.

Key activities
  • Set up staging and production CI/CD pipelines
  • Launch a closed or open beta with real users
  • Monitor errors through observability tools
Stage 6

Public Release (Launch)

Goal: Roll the software out to the general public.

Key activities
  • Final production deployment
  • DNS configuration
  • Marketing and onboarding rollout
  • Post-launch performance and security monitoring

Business benefits

Peace of mind while away

Status and alerts follow the responsible person, wherever they are.

Less alarm fatigue

Rules keep routine activity from competing with serious events.

Fewer silent failures

Device problems surface before they leave a gap in coverage.

A clear record

An event log gives everyone the same account of what happened.

Conclusion

Good home security is mostly about communication. A sensor can detect a door opening, but someone still has to find out, understand it and decide what to do. Hexagon built this solution around that moment, joining devices, rules and a simple application into one working system for a hospitality client. If you offer homes, stays or residences and want security that people can actually use, or you are adding connected devices to an existing service, tell us what you have in mind. FAQs

Does this work with existing security devices? It depends on the devices and how they communicate. We would check that early in scoping.
Can several people use one home's system?Yes. Each person gets individual access, and their actions appear in the event history.
Can notifications be limited to serious events?Yes. Rules decide which event types notify which people, so routine activity stays quiet.
Can this be offered across many properties? The same pattern can be set up for several homes, with staff overseeing their status from one view.
