Aviation Training, CRM and iPad Inflight App

A learning management system, a CRM and an iPad inflight app for an aviation group where training records and customer relationships both carry real weight.

Business goals

The client is a large aviation group with a wide range of flying, maintenance and training activity, and customers in both government and commercial sectors. Aviation staff need current training records, since regulators expect proof of what each person has completed and when. Customer relationships are long and high in value, and a tablet carried on board has to work with no connection. The client needed three tools for three very different settings: the classroom, the sales desk and the cabin.

Project overview

Hexagon delivered three separate pieces of work. The LMS gives learners courses and assessments, and gives training managers a current view of completions and expiring qualifications. The CRM holds customer organizations, contacts and opportunities, so account teams work from shared records. The iPad inflight app puts flight-related content on a tablet that keeps working in the air, then updates once the device is back on a connection.

Challenges faced and solved

Aviation has little tolerance for an out-of-date record, a dropped relationship or an app that fails at altitude.

The challenge

Proving training is current

Aviation staff hold qualifications that need renewing. When records are spread across classrooms and spreadsheets, a manager can struggle to show who is current, and an audit request becomes a scramble.

Our solution

We built an LMS where completions, scores and expiry dates sit on each learner's record, so managers can pull the current picture at any time.

The challenge

Serving learners with varied schedules

People on shift patterns and rotating duties can't always attend a classroom at a set hour. Paper materials also go out of date, and nobody can be sure who has the newest version.

Our solution

We gave learners online courses and assessments they can complete around their duties, and a single current version of each course.

The challenge

Keeping long customer relationships in view

A group serving government and commercial customers has contracts that run for years and contacts who change roles. If those details live with one account manager, the knowledge leaves when that person does.

Our solution

We built a CRM around organizations and contacts, with opportunities, notes and contract dates, so the relationship belongs to the company.

The challenge

Staying useful with no connection

Once a flight leaves the ground, a tablet may have no network at all. An app that relies on a live connection simply fails, and it does so in front of the people relying on it.

Our solution

We designed the iPad app to store its content on the device, then update it when connected, so it works the same way throughout a flight.

Features

FeatureDescription
Learners
1. Course CatalogLearners see the courses assigned to their role, along with anything optional.
2. Online LessonsReading and video materials can be taken at a learner's own pace around duty schedules.
3. AssessmentsQuizzes and exams test understanding and record the score automatically.
4. Training TranscriptEach learner can see what they have completed and when each item expires.
5. Completion CertificatesA certificate is issued on passing, and the learner can retrieve it whenever it is requested.
Training managers
6. Course AuthoringStaff create and revise courses, with one current version for everyone.
7. Role-Based AssignmentRequired courses are assigned by job role, so nobody has to remember who needs what.
8. Expiry AlertsLearners and managers are warned ahead of a qualification lapsing, leaving time to schedule a refresher.
9. Compliance ReportsManagers can produce completion and currency reports by team, which makes audit preparation easier.
10. Instructor-Led Session RecordsClassroom sessions and attendance sit alongside online courses in a single learner record.
Account and sales teams
11. Organization and Contact RecordsEach customer organization holds its people, roles and full history.
12. Opportunity PipelinePotential contracts are tracked by stage, value and owner.
13. Contract Date TrackingRenewal dates are recorded, so a conversation can begin well before an agreement ends.
14. Activity NotesMeetings and calls are logged, allowing a new account manager to catch up quickly.
15. Sales ReportsLeaders see open opportunities and activity by sector and team.
Inflight users
16. iPad Inflight AppA native iPad app designed for use on board, with large touch targets for use in a moving cabin.
17. Offline ContentContent is stored on the device, so the app works with no connection in the air.
18. Content SyncNew content arrives automatically when the iPad is back online, so devices stay current without manual updates.
19. Content ManagementOffice staff publish and update inflight content centrally, instead of updating tablets one by one.

How we took it from idea to launch

Good software follows a process. Here are the six stages, and what happens in each one.

Stage 1

Discovery & Requirements

Goal: Define the product vision, target audience and core business requirements.

Key activities
  • Stakeholder interviews
  • Market and competitor research
  • Defining user personas
  • Drafting technical specifications or a Product Requirements Document (PRD)
Stage 2

Design (UX / UI)

Goal: Create an intuitive user experience and visual interface.

Key activities
  • UX design: information architecture, user flows and wireframes
  • UI design: high-fidelity mockups and interactive prototypes in Figma or similar tools
  • Design system: colors, typography and component libraries
Stage 3

Development: Frontend & Backend

Goal: Build the functional application using agile sprints.

Key activities
  • Backend: set up databases, design APIs (REST, GraphQL), implement server logic, and configure authentication and authorization (OAuth, RBAC)
  • Frontend: build responsive interfaces and connect components to backend APIs
  • Version control: manage code through Git and GitHub
Stage 4

Security & Optimization

Goal: Harden the application against vulnerabilities and boost performance.

Key activities
  • Security: address the OWASP Top 10, including injection, XSS and CSRF, enforce encryption in transit and at rest, and implement rate limiting
  • Optimization: code splitting and lazy loading, database indexing, API caching and load testing
  • QA and testing: unit, integration and end-to-end tests
Stage 5

Beta Release

Goal: Deploy to a controlled group of real users to catch edge-case bugs and gather feedback.

Key activities
  • Set up staging and production CI/CD pipelines
  • Launch a closed or open beta with real users
  • Monitor errors through observability tools
Stage 6

Public Release (Launch)

Goal: Roll the software out to the general public.

Key activities
  • Final production deployment
  • DNS configuration
  • Marketing and onboarding rollout
  • Post-launch performance and security monitoring

Business benefits

Easier audit preparation

Training status can be pulled by person or team when it is requested.

Fewer lapsed qualifications

Alerts give people time to renew before an expiry date.

Lasting customer knowledge

Relationship history stays with the company when staff move on.

Dependable onboard use

The iPad app does not rely on a network during flight.

Conclusion

Aviation organizations answer to regulators, to customers and to whoever is on board, and each needs something different from software. Hexagon built an LMS that keeps training records current, a CRM that keeps customer history in the company's hands, and an iPad app that keeps working in the air. Three settings, each with a tool designed for how the work happens there. If you run an aviation or transport business with similar needs, we'd be glad to compare notes. Let's talk.

FAQs

Can the LMS track recurring qualifications?Yes. Expiry dates and alerts are part of the learner record, so renewals can be planned ahead.
Does the iPad app work without Wi-Fi?Yes. It was designed to store content on the device and update when back online.
Can you build only one of these three?Yes. Each works on its own. This client's needs happened to cover all three.
Do you build for Android tablets as well?Yes. We build native apps and can advise on which platforms fit your fleet of devices.
