On-Demand Rideshare Platform

Rider and driver apps that get new drivers verified and on the road, with the compliance and safety controls a transportation business depends on.

DeliverablesiOS and Android apps, user portal, admin console, launch marketing

Business goals

The client wanted to enter the ride-hailing market with a service built around drivers: flexible hours, a fast sign-up and a route in for people who didn't own a car. To compete, it needed apps that felt as simple as the established names, plus the compliance and safety controls that a transportation business can't skip.

Project overview

Hexagon took the project from concept to launch. We shaped the product, then built iOS and Android apps, a user portal, driver tools and an admin console, and supported launch marketing. Vehicles, documents, trips, payments and incident reports all run through one backend.

Challenges faced and solved

A rideshare service is two businesses in one, and each side only works if the other shows up.

Driver uploading documents on a phone during sign-up
The challenge

Getting drivers on the road fast

Every rideshare launch has the same problem: riders won't come without drivers, and drivers won't wait around. A long sign-up loses them before they ever take a trip.

Our solution

We built a mobile sign-up with OTP verification and a clear split between drivers who have a car and those who need one, so each person sees only the steps that apply.

The challenge

Keeping every driver compliant

A driver with expired insurance is a risk to the rider and the business. Tracking that by email and spreadsheet doesn't hold up once the driver base grows.

Our solution

We built document storage into the app. Insurance, license and vehicle records, including expiry dates, sit with each driver's account.

The challenge

Earning trust on both sides

A rider is getting into a stranger's car. A driver is picking up a stranger. If something goes wrong, both need to know what happens next.

Our solution

We built safety guidance and incident reporting into the product, with separate categories from roadside help to accidents and emergencies.

The challenge

Giving drivers a reason to stay

Drivers compare apps constantly. If they can't see where the demand is or what they earned, they'll switch.

Our solution

We gave drivers high-demand locations, scheduled trips, a transaction view and detailed trip history, so they can run their driving like a small business.

Features

FeatureDescription
Rider app
1. Create AccountRiders sign up on their phone and verify their number, so they can book a first ride within minutes.
2. Request a RideRiders set a pickup and destination and send the request to nearby available drivers.
3. Airport RidesA dedicated airport ride option handles one of the most common and time-sensitive trips.
4. Live Trip TrackingRiders watch the driver arrive on a map, which removes the doubt about whether the ride is coming.
5. Rider PortalRiders manage their account and past trips in their own portal.
6. Rate and ReportAfter a trip, riders can give feedback or report a problem, which feeds the service's safety process.
Driver app

10. Document StorageInsurance and driver's license records stay in the app, including the insurance expiry date.
11. Driver DashboardOne home screen brings together trips, earnings and account tasks.
12. Trip HistoryTrips are organized into past, business, personal and cancelled, so drivers can find what they need for their records.
13. Scheduled TripsDrivers can see rides booked ahead of time and plan their day around them.
14. Payments and TransactionsDrivers review payments and transaction history in the app, so earnings aren't a mystery.
15. Built-In NavigationDrivers get directions in the app while staying on the trip.
16. High-Demand LocationsThe app shows where demand is high, which helps drivers decide where to wait.
17. Flexible SchedulingDrivers choose when to start and stop, which is a major reason people sign up to drive.
18. TrainingTraining content in the app prepares new drivers before and after they start.
19. Vehicle MarketplaceA marketplace section gives drivers a route to a vehicle from inside the app.
Safety and admin
20. Safety GuidanceIn-app guidance covers trust and safety, harassment, and riders with disabilities, vision needs, pets or senior passengers.
21. Incident ReportingStructured categories cover roadside assistance, safety incidents, accidents, citations, emergencies and damage.
22. Admin ConsoleStaff review drivers, documents, trips and incident reports from one console.

How we took it from idea to launch

Good software follows a process. Here are the six stages, and what happens in each one.

Stage 1

Discovery & Requirements

Goal: Define the product vision, target audience and core business requirements.

Key activities
  • Stakeholder interviews
  • Market and competitor research
  • Defining user personas for riders and drivers
  • Drafting technical specifications or a Product Requirements Document (PRD)
Stage 2

Design (UX / UI)

Goal: Create an intuitive user experience and visual interface.

Key activities
  • UX design: information architecture, user flows and wireframes
  • UI design: high-fidelity mockups and interactive prototypes in Figma or similar tools
  • Design system: colors, typography and component libraries
Stage 3

Development: Frontend & Backend

Goal: Build the functional application using agile sprints.

Key activities
  • Backend: set up databases, design APIs (REST, GraphQL), implement server logic, and configure authentication and authorization (OAuth, RBAC)
  • Frontend: build responsive interfaces and connect components to backend APIs
  • Version control: manage code through Git and GitHub
Stage 4

Security & Optimization

Goal: Harden the application against vulnerabilities and boost performance.

Key activities
  • Security: address the OWASP Top 10, including injection, XSS and CSRF, enforce encryption in transit and at rest, and implement rate limiting
  • Optimization: code splitting and lazy loading, database indexing, API caching and load testing
  • QA and testing: unit, integration and end-to-end tests
Stage 5

Beta Release

Goal: Deploy to a controlled group of real users to catch edge-case bugs and gather feedback.

Key activities
  • Set up staging and production CI/CD pipelines
  • Launch a closed or open beta with real riders and drivers
  • Monitor errors through observability tools
Stage 6

Public Release (Launch)

Goal: Roll the software out to the general public.

Key activities
  • Final production deployment
  • DNS configuration
  • Marketing and onboarding rollout
  • Post-launch performance and security monitoring

Business benefits

Faster driver supply

A short mobile sign-up removes a common reason drivers drop out.

Lower compliance risk

Document records and expiry dates stay with each driver.

A wider driver pool

The separate path for drivers without a car opens the service to more people.

Stronger trust

Safety guidance and incident reporting show riders and drivers there's a process.

Conclusion

Ride-hailing looks simple from the back seat. Behind it are two apps, compliance records, payments, safety processes and a launch that has to attract both sides at once. Hexagon handled all of it under one team, which meant the client didn't have to manage separate vendors for product, development and marketing. The work didn't stop with one app either. We went on to build a trucking app for a trucking company and a private taxi app for a company in Dubai, so this experience now spans passengers, freight and more than one country. If you have a marketplace or mobility idea, that's the kind of work we can take from concept to launch.
