Engineering Supplies E-Commerce Platform

An online store built for engineering buyers who shop by specification, job and purchase order.

Business goals

Buying for engineering work isn't like buying consumer goods. Field crews and project staff know what they need, often by specification, and they need it charged to the right job. The client wanted an e-commerce platform that made that easy. It needed clear product information, a catalog staff could keep current, and an ordering path that suited professional buyers placing orders for working projects.

Project overview

Hexagon built the client's e-commerce platform, covering the storefront, catalog, buyer accounts, checkout and back-office tools. Products are organized by category and carry their technical details and data sheets. Buyers can search by part or specification, reorder from past purchases and add a job reference at checkout. Staff manage items, stock status and orders from an admin console without developer help.

Challenges faced and solved

Engineering buyers want the right specification first and a fast order second.

The challenge

Buyers shop by specification

An engineer looking for a part wants the rating, size and material before anything else. A store built around pictures and marketing copy sends that buyer straight back to the phone.

Our solution

We structured product pages around technical attributes and downloadable data sheets, then made those attributes searchable and filterable across the whole catalog.

The challenge

Orders belong to a job

Project staff need to tie a purchase to a job or purchase order for their own accounting. A consumer checkout with no place for that creates extra paperwork later.

Our solution

We added job and purchase order references at checkout and carried them through to the order record and the buyer's confirmation email.

The challenge

The same items, again and again

Professional buyers often reorder the same materials across projects. Rebuilding a basket from memory each time wastes their time and invites ordering the wrong item.

Our solution

We gave account holders an order history with one-step reorder, so a repeat purchase takes moments and matches the last one.

The challenge

A catalog that goes stale

Technical products change, and a wrong dimension or an outdated sheet can cost a buyer a site visit. A catalog that needs a developer for each change falls behind.

Our solution

We built an admin console where staff can update items, attributes, documents and stock status directly, without opening a request with a developer.

Features

FeatureDescription
Buyers
1. Category NavigationProducts are grouped the way engineering buyers think about them, so people can get to a product family quickly.
2. Part and Keyword SearchBuyers can search by part number or term, which suits people who already know what they want.
3. Attribute FiltersLists narrow by technical attributes such as size or material, cutting long lists down to the items that fit.
4. Technical Product PagesEach page shows specifications alongside the price and order button, so buyers don't need to call for basics.
5. Data Sheet DownloadsDocuments attach to the product, so buyers can pass them to colleagues or file them with project records.
6. Buyer AccountsCustomers keep their details, addresses and orders in one login.
7. Order History and ReorderPast orders stay visible and can be repeated with little effort.
8. Job and PO ReferenceBuyers enter a job or purchase order number at checkout, which makes the purchase simple to reconcile.
9. Cart and CheckoutA short path to order keeps a routine purchase from becoming a project of its own.
10. Order Confirmation EmailsBuyers receive a record of what was ordered, with their reference included.
Store staff
11. Product ManagementStaff add and edit items, specifications and images in the admin console.
12. Document ManagementData sheets can be replaced when they change, keeping the current version on the product page.

How we took it from idea to launch

Good software follows a process. Here are the six stages, and what happens in each one.

Stage 1

Discovery & Requirements

Goal: Define the product vision, target audience and core business requirements.

Key activities
  • Stakeholder interviews
  • Market and competitor research
  • Defining user personas
  • Drafting technical specifications or a Product Requirements Document (PRD)
Stage 2

Design (UX / UI)

Goal: Create an intuitive user experience and visual interface.

Key activities
  • UX design: information architecture, user flows and wireframes
  • UI design: high-fidelity mockups and interactive prototypes in Figma or similar tools
  • Design system: colors, typography and component libraries
Stage 3

Development: Frontend & Backend

Goal: Build the functional application using agile sprints.

Key activities
  • Backend: set up databases, design APIs (REST, GraphQL), implement server logic, and configure authentication and authorization (OAuth, RBAC)
  • Frontend: build responsive interfaces and connect components to backend APIs
  • Version control: manage code through Git and GitHub
Stage 4

Security & Optimization

Goal: Harden the application against vulnerabilities and boost performance.

Key activities
  • Security: address the OWASP Top 10, including injection, XSS and CSRF, enforce encryption in transit and at rest, and implement rate limiting
  • Optimization: code splitting and lazy loading, database indexing, API caching and load testing
  • QA and testing: unit, integration and end-to-end tests
Stage 5

Beta Release

Goal: Deploy to a controlled group of real users to catch edge-case bugs and gather feedback.

Key activities
  • Set up staging and production CI/CD pipelines
  • Launch a closed or open beta with real users
  • Monitor errors through observability tools
Stage 6

Public Release (Launch)

Goal: Roll the software out to the general public.

Key activities
  • Final production deployment
  • DNS configuration
  • Marketing and onboarding rollout
  • Post-launch performance and security monitoring

Business benefits

Fewer routine calls

Specifications and data sheets answer common questions on the product page.

Easier reconciliation

Job and purchase order references follow the order through.

Repeat business made easy

Account holders can reorder without starting over.

A catalog staff control

Updates happen when products change, without waiting on a developer.

Conclusion

Engineering buyers judge an online store quickly. If the specification is missing, or the order can't be tied to a job, they pick up the phone or go elsewhere. Hexagon built this platform around how those buyers work, and gave staff the tools to keep technical content correct over time. If you sell technical products to professional buyers and your website isn't doing its share of the selling, we would welcome a conversation about what your store needs.
