Business goals

The client sells replacement parts online for household products and equipment. Customers usually arrive with a broken machine and a model number, and they need to be sure they are ordering the right piece. A part that looks like it fits but doesn't means a return and a repair still undone. The client needed visual and written content that made parts easier to recognize, prepared in a consistent way across catalog items.

Project overview

Hexagon delivered 3D modeling, AutoCAD drawing and description writing for the client's replacement parts. Each part could be shown as a model or technical drawing, supported by a plain written description of what it is. The output gave the client consistent content to use with its catalog. This was a production engagement focused on accuracy and consistency, with parts handled as defined items rather than one-off illustrations.

Challenges faced and solved

Buying a replacement part online comes down to one question: is this the piece I need?

The challenge

Parts that look alike

Many replacement parts differ by a small tab, hole or connector. Customers comparing near-identical items may choose wrongly, which creates returns and delays their repair.

Our solution

We prepared models and drawings that show part shape and features clearly, so details that matter are easier to compare.

The challenge

Consistency across a catalog

Part content that comes from many sources tends to vary in style and depth. An uneven catalog makes shoppers less sure about whether they can trust what they see.

Our solution

We followed the same approach for models, drawings and descriptions, so parts read and look alike across the work we delivered.

The challenge

Descriptions shoppers can follow

A part name alone can mean little to a homeowner fixing a machine for the first time. Without plain wording, they may not realize what a part does or where it goes.

Our solution

We wrote descriptions that say what the part is, in terms that are useful to someone doing their own repair at home.

The challenge

Working accurately from references

Drawings and models are only as good as their source information. Small errors copied across the work can easily send customers toward the wrong part.

Our solution

We worked from the reference information the client supplied and flagged anything unclear for review, instead of guessing at a dimension or a feature.

1. 3D Part ViewsModels show a part's shape in a way a flat photo may not, which helps with recognizing it.
2. Technical DrawingsAutoCAD drawings show the part's outline and features clearly, without the distractions of a photograph.
3. Plain DescriptionsShort written text explains what the part is, so a first-time repairer can feel sure about the choice.

4. Part ModelingParts are built as 3D digital models from the supplied references.
5. AutoCAD Drawing ProductionDrawings are produced in AutoCAD, a standard format technical staff can open and reuse.
6. Description WritingEach part receives written copy that follows one approach.
7. Reference ChecksQuestions about unclear source material go back to the client, rather than being resolved by guesswork.
8. Organized File DeliveryFiles are named and handed over in a way that lets staff match each output to its part.

How we took it from idea to launch

Good software follows a process. Here are the six stages, and what happens in each one.

Stage 1

Discovery & Requirements

Goal: Define the product vision, target audience and core business requirements.

Key activities
  • Stakeholder interviews
  • Market and competitor research
  • Defining user personas
  • Drafting technical specifications or a Product Requirements Document (PRD)
Stage 2

Design (UX / UI)

Goal: Create an intuitive user experience and visual interface.

Key activities
  • UX design: information architecture, user flows and wireframes
  • UI design: high-fidelity mockups and interactive prototypes in Figma or similar tools
  • Design system: colors, typography and component libraries
Stage 3

Development: Frontend & Backend

Goal: Build the functional application using agile sprints.

Key activities
  • Backend: set up databases, design APIs (REST, GraphQL), implement server logic, and configure authentication and authorization (OAuth, RBAC)
  • Frontend: build responsive interfaces and connect components to backend APIs
  • Version control: manage code through Git and GitHub
Stage 4

Security & Optimization

Goal: Harden the application against vulnerabilities and boost performance.

Key activities
  • Security: address the OWASP Top 10, including injection, XSS and CSRF, enforce encryption in transit and at rest, and implement rate limiting
  • Optimization: code splitting and lazy loading, database indexing, API caching and load testing
  • QA and testing: unit, integration and end-to-end tests
Stage 5

Beta Release

Goal: Deploy to a controlled group of real users to catch edge-case bugs and gather feedback.

Key activities
  • Set up staging and production CI/CD pipelines
  • Launch a closed or open beta with real users
  • Monitor errors through observability tools
Stage 6

Public Release (Launch)

Goal: Roll the software out to the general public.

Key activities
  • Final production deployment
  • DNS configuration
  • Marketing and onboarding rollout
  • Post-launch performance and security monitoring

Business benefits

Easier part recognition

Shoppers get clearer views of what they are buying.

Fewer doubts before ordering

Descriptions explain the part in plain language.

More consistent content

Delivered parts follow one approach.

Reusable source files

Technical files stay available for later use.

Conclusion

When a washer or mower breaks, the customer wants the right part the first time. That depends on how clearly the part is shown and explained online. Hexagon supplied the client with 3D models, AutoCAD drawings and written descriptions built to help with that decision. It was focused production work, done with care for the details that separate one part from another. If your catalog needs better technical content, we'd be pleased to talk through the work involved.

FAQs

Do you work in AutoCAD?Yes. This project included AutoCAD drawings along with 3D models.
Can you write the part descriptions too?Yes. Written descriptions were part of this work, so visuals and text come from one team.
What do you need from us to start?Reference material such as existing drawings, dimensions or photos, plus a list of the parts to cover.
Is this only for online retailers? No. Distributors and manufacturers with parts catalogs have the same need.
