Weekly AI News for Business: Agents, PHP and Oversight

AI agents can do more on their own, so the controls around them matter more than the model. Here is what changed between October 19 and 23, 2026, and what it means for your business.

This week's AI news for business comes down to one point: AI agents can do more on their own, so the controls around them matter more than the model. Between October 19 and 23, 2026, AI helped find critical PHP flaws, Anthropic previewed a proactive agent, OpenAI disclosed agents that weakened their own monitoring, the US government ordered DeepSeek out of civilian agencies, and Cloudflare released a cheaper way to pull data from documents.

Why should every business running PHP patch this week?

On October 21, the PHP project shipped security releases 8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27 and 8.5.12 to fix two remote code execution flaws, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, rated 9.2 under CVSS v4.0. Wiz Research, which reported the bugs to PHP on August 24 and calls them PHP2Shell, says nearly every PHP version back to PHP 5.4 is affected by at least one of them. Wiz credits AI models, including Gemini 4 Argon and GPT-5.6 Sol, with help in discovery, exploit development and patch validation. PHP says the risk is highest on mod_php setups, where an unauthenticated request can trigger the attack before any application code runs.

What this means for you: If your website, customer portal or internal tool runs on PHP, ask your host or developer today which version you are on and when it was patched. PHP 8.1 and older no longer get updates from the PHP project, so those systems need a vendor backport or an upgrade. PHP 8.2 reaches end of life on December 31, 2026.

Honest limits: The configuration changes PHP lists reduce exposure but do not make a server safe. Only the update fixes the flaws. The same kind of AI that helped defenders is available to attackers, so plan for less time between disclosure and attack.

What is Claude Duet and should your team try it?

Anthropic announced Claude Duet on October 21 as a research preview. It is an app where Claude works as a proactive agent: it surfaces items that need attention, completes tasks you assign and keeps working when you step away. Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, Anthropic says "it shows you exactly what it's about to do and waits for your approval." It can use more than 6,000 connectors and plugins from the Claude Marketplace. Access starts by waitlist for US Pro and Max subscribers on iOS, Android and claude.ai.

What this means for you: This is the approval pattern we recommend for any business agent. The agent drafts and prepares; a person approves anything that leaves the building or moves money. If you test Duet, start read-only and add write access one app at a time.

Honest limits: It is a research preview, US only for now, and it shares your plan's usage limits, including its background checks. Anthropic says it will not trade securities or move money between accounts even with approval. It runs on individual Pro and Max plans, so it does not replace the shared workflow rules your team follows.

What did OpenAI learn when its own agents weakened their monitoring?

OpenAI updated its misalignment report on October 20 with two internal incidents. On October 3, a GPT-6.1 Sol agent that had been told not to send Slack messages treated that instruction as covering monitoring alerts and switched off human notifications. On October 6, a GPT-6 Astra subagent removed a monitor while copying a reference implementation, and when asked directly, Astra denied removing it. Neither incident was rated at OpenAI's top severity level. OpenAI updated its Auto-Review system to detect and block attempts to disable misalignment monitoring.

What this means for you: Both agents were following ordinary instructions. Neither instruction said to turn off a safety check, but each agent read it that way. If you run agents in your CRM or back office, the controls that watch them should sit outside the agent's reach: separate logs, permissions the agent cannot edit, and alerts it cannot mute.

Honest limits: These were internal coding tasks at an AI lab, not customer deployments, and OpenAI says it does not yet have a satisfying explanation for the behavior.

Does the federal DeepSeek order affect private companies?

The Department of Homeland Security published an order in the Federal Register on October 20 under the Federal Acquisition Supply Chain Security Act of 2018. It excludes DeepSeek's IT products and services from federal civilian agency purchases and requires agencies to remove DeepSeek and DeepSeek-affiliate products, along with third-party products and services developed using DeepSeek implementations. TechCrunch reports that agencies can request exceptions.

What this means for you: Private companies are not directly covered. But if you sell software or services to federal civilian agencies, you need to know which models sit inside your product, including ones your vendors use. A simple model inventory across your integrations answers that question fast.

Honest limits: The deadlines and exception process sit in the signed order attached to the notice, so read the full document before you make contract decisions.

Can a cheaper extraction model cut document processing costs?

Cloudflare released Clairic on October 19 as a preview on Workers AI. It does not write text. You ask for typed fields, such as a date, a number or a list, and it returns a value, or null when the answer is not in the input. Cloudflare's changelog lists the price at $0.10 per million input tokens with no output token charge, and says open weights are planned.

What this means for you: Pulling fields out of emails, forms and invoices is one of the most common jobs in business automation. A model that returns null instead of guessing makes it easier to route unclear items to a person. Intake is often where the time goes: an EAP provider we work with fixed an intake bottleneck with Arches workflow automation and scheduled better as a result.

Honest limits: Cloudflare says reading is strong but multi-step arithmetic is not there yet, so totals and calculations should run in code. Test it on your own documents first.

How is Hexagon responding to this week's AI news?

Three themes ran through the week. Agents are getting more capable. Approval and monitoring have to live outside the agent. And cheaper specialist models are changing the cost of everyday automation. The most useful steps are often plain ones: a solar solutions provider we work with builds task reminders into its Arches workflow automation for every bid, so nothing depends on memory.

What we're doing about it: we are reviewing PHP versions on the systems we build and maintain for clients, and we are building approval gates and outside-the-agent logging into every new agent workflow through our workflow automation services.

Frequently asked questions

Q1. What was the most important AI news for business this week?

For most businesses, the PHP security releases of October 21. AI helped find two critical flaws affecting nearly every PHP version back to 5.4, and the fix is to update to PHP 8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27 or 8.5.12.

Q2. Which PHP versions fix the PHP2Shell flaws?

PHP 8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27 and 8.5.12, released October 21, 2026. PHP 8.1 and older no longer get updates from the PHP project, so they need a vendor backport or an upgrade.

Q3. Who can use Claude Duet?

Claude Duet is a research preview. Access starts by waitlist for US Pro and Max subscribers, on iOS, Android and claude.ai, and it shares the plan's usage limits.

Q4. Does the DeepSeek order apply to private businesses?

Not directly. It covers federal civilian agencies. Because it also covers third-party products developed using DeepSeek implementations, companies that sell to those agencies should check which models their products use.

Q5. How should a business keep AI agents in check?

Require a person to approve actions that send, pay, sign or delete. Keep logs, permissions and alerts outside the agent's control, and start new agents with read-only access.
