SAP ECC End of Support: Your Options Before 2027

SAP ECC mainstream maintenance ends at the end of 2027. Here are the dates that matter, the paths you can take and the work to finish first so the choice rests on facts.

SAP ECC end of support arrives in stages. Mainstream maintenance for SAP Business Suite 7 core applications, which include ECC 6.0, runs until the end of 2027, and optional extended maintenance runs until the end of 2030 at a higher fee. If your business still runs on ECC, the useful question is not whether to move but which path fits your processes, budget and timeline.

This guide explains the dates, the main options and the work we would do first so the choice rests on evidence instead of guesswork.

What is ending for SAP ECC, and when?

In February 2020, SAP announced that mainstream maintenance for SAP Business Suite 7 core applications would run until the end of 2027. Customers can buy extended maintenance until the end of 2030, at a premium of two percentage points on their existing maintenance basis. In the same announcement, SAP committed to maintain S/4HANA until at least the end of 2040.

SAP later added another route for some large customers. In August 2025, SAP described SAP ERP, private edition, transition option as a time-bound subscription for business continuity after 2030. It comes with strict conditions: systems must already run on SAP ERP, private edition on SAP HANA before the end of 2030, a minimum system size applies, and a paid success plan is required. SAP has updated that page since, so confirm the current terms with SAP before you plan around it.

For most mid-size companies, the practical takeaway is simple. The end of 2027 is the date that matters for budgeting, and the end of 2030 is the outer edge for most plans.

What are your real options?

  • Convert to S/4HANA. Often called a brownfield move. You keep much of your configuration and history and convert the system. It suits companies whose ECC processes still work well.
  • Re-implement S/4HANA. A greenfield move. You start with a clean design and migrate selected data. It suits companies carrying years of custom code and workarounds.
  • Move to a different ERP. Some companies find their needs have changed and another product fits better.
  • Buy time. Extended maintenance or third-party support gives room, but it does not remove the eventual move and it costs money each year.

None of these is right by default. The answer depends on how much of your current system you actually use, how much custom code you carry and how many other systems depend on ECC.

Which questions should you answer before choosing a path?

We start with the business, not the software. Before comparing licenses or partners, get clear answers to these questions:

  1. Which processes run your business? List order to cash, procure to pay, record to report, inventory and any industry steps. Mark which are standard and which are custom.
  2. How much custom code do you still use? Many ECC systems carry reports and programs nobody has run in years. Usage data tells you what to keep.
  3. What connects to ECC? CRM, ecommerce, warehouse, payroll, banks, EDI partners and reporting tools all need a plan. Each connection is a cutover risk.
  4. How clean is your master data? Duplicate customers, old vendors and inconsistent material records slow down every path.
  5. Who owns the decision? A named executive sponsor and a process owner for each area keep the project from stalling.

How do integrations change the timeline?

Integrations are where ERP projects often slip. A sales order may start in a CRM, pass through ECC and land in a warehouse system and an invoicing tool. When ECC changes, each of those links has to be rebuilt, tested and switched over in the right order.

We suggest an integration inventory early: every system, every interface, its direction, its frequency, its owner and what happens when it fails. That list shapes the cutover plan. It also tends to reveal manual steps, such as spreadsheets that move data between systems, that the new design should automate. Our API and system integration services start with exactly this kind of inventory.

The same discipline applies to data. Our guide to CRM migration reconciliation explains how to check that the work moved, not just the record count. The same checks carry over to ERP data.

What should you do in the next 90 days?

You do not need a full program to make progress. In the next quarter, aim to finish:

  • An inventory of processes, custom objects and integrations, each with an owner.
  • A usage review of custom code and reports, so you know what to retire.
  • A master data cleanup plan for customers, vendors and materials.
  • A rough cost and timeline for two paths, for example conversion versus re-implementation, so leadership compares real options.
  • A check of your SAP contract and maintenance terms, so you know your actual dates and fees.

With that in hand, you can talk to SAP, partners or other ERP vendors from a position of facts. If your ERP also feeds older custom applications, our legacy system modernization work covers the systems around the ERP, not only the ERP itself. If you are replacing an HR platform at the same time, see our HR system migration checklist.

What mistakes do companies make with ECC deadlines?

  • Waiting for the last year. Partner capacity, testing time and staff availability all get tighter close to a deadline.
  • Copying old problems. Moving every custom report and workaround into a new system carries the old pain forward.
  • Treating it as an IT project. Finance, operations and sales own the processes and need to sign off on the design.
  • Ignoring the systems around the ERP. A clean ERP with broken integrations still stops orders.

Frequently asked questions

When does SAP ECC support end?

SAP mainstream maintenance for SAP Business Suite 7 core applications, which include SAP ERP 6.0 (ECC), ends at the end of 2027. Optional extended maintenance runs to the end of 2030 at a higher fee. Check your own contract for your exact terms.

Can we stay on ECC after 2027?

Yes, through extended maintenance, the SAP transition option if you qualify, or third-party support. Each one costs money every year, and none of them removes the need to plan a move.

Is S/4HANA the only option?

No. You can convert to S/4HANA, re-implement S/4HANA with a clean design, or move to a different ERP. The right path depends on your processes, custom code and integrations.

How long does an ECC migration take?

It varies with scope, data quality and the number of connected systems. An inventory of processes, custom code and interfaces is the fastest way to get a realistic estimate for your business.
