MSP vs MSSP: What's the Difference and Which Do You Need?

An MSP, a managed service provider, runs your IT environment: users, devices, cloud tenants, backups, and the day-to-day ticket queue. An MSSP, a managed security service provider, runs security monitoring and response: defined log sources, alert handling, and a stated set of controls. You need an MSP when reliable operations are the gap. You need an MSSP when nobody is actually watching for misuse. Many organizations need both, either from one firm with two written scopes or from two firms with a written handoff.

Hexagon IT Solutions uses those definitions as operating scopes, not as logos. A provider that uses both labels still has to say which work is included. This article does not rank providers.

Decision guide showing when to buy MSP operations, MSSP monitoring, or both with a written handoff

What should you expect from an MSP?

Answer: Expect the provider to keep the environment usable and recoverable. That usually includes joining and removing users, endpoint standards, tenant administration, backup jobs, and a queue for break-fix. The contract should say the hours, the systems in scope, and what “done” means for a new-hire request or a restore. An MSP is not automatically a security operations center. If detection and response are not listed, they are not included.

What should you expect from an MSSP?

Expect a defined watch: which sources are in scope, what the provider will alert on, who is called, and how fast a human responds after the contract’s own definition of an incident. Also expect a clear list of what they will not do. Many security retainers do not patch line-of-business applications, do not administer your ERP, and do not make firewall changes unless that change path is written down. Monitoring without authority to act, and without a customer owner who can approve action, produces reports rather than response.

Where the work overlaps

The messy middle is identity, endpoint tools, email security, firewall changes, and patching. An MSP may deploy an endpoint agent and still not review its alerts. An MSSP may flag a risky sign-in and still be unable to disable the account. If both are in place, name the owner of each action: who disables access, who approves a firewall change, who tests backups, and who tells the other provider. Overlap without that handoff is how the same control is billed twice or owned by no one.

Patching is a common example. Keeping systems current is operations work. Noticing exploitation is monitoring work. Both matter. Putting them in one sentence on a proposal does not make them one scope. Tie the operating procedures to software security practices you can audit: access reviews, logging, and tested recovery.

Which do you need?

Start from the gap you can describe this month.

  • If new hires wait on access, tickets age, and nobody has restored a backup on purpose, you need MSP discipline first. Monitoring a neglected environment mostly produces alerts you cannot act on.
  • If operations are already staffed, internally or with an MSP, but security alerts have no reviewer, add an MSSP scope or an internal on-call that is real.
  • If one provider offers both, ask for two scopes, two runbooks, and named people. “We do security too” is not a scope.

A smaller firm can still choose a single partner. The test is whether the agreement separates keeping systems up from watching for misuse, and whether your own team knows which calls are yours.

Evidence to require in the contract

Ask for artifacts, not adjectives. A monthly list of systems in scope. A backup restore that was actually run, with the date. A record of accounts removed when people left. A sample incident timeline that shows customer and provider steps. Offboarding terms if you leave: configurations, documentation, and admin access returned. Avoid buying a promise of “full coverage.” Coverage is the list of systems and hours you were willing to name.

How Hexagon applies this

Hexagon IT Solutions helps organizations put an operating model in place: support processes, identity, backups, integrations, and security controls with an owner. That can sit beside an MSP scope, an MSSP scope, or internal staff. If you are unsure which gap you have, start with a systems audit or schedule a call. The useful outcome is a written line between operations and monitoring, not a new acronym on a slide.

Key takeaways

  • An MSP runs IT operations. An MSSP runs security monitoring and response. The labels are not interchangeable.
  • Buy the scope that matches the gap you can describe, and write the handoff where the work overlaps.
  • Require evidence: systems in scope, restores, access removal, and an incident path with names.
